Anniversary of the foundation of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America, invites you to join us for a panel discussion and cocktail reception on Bolivarianism, economic integration and regional cooperation. The event will be held on December 5 at 7:00pm in the Bolivarian Hall, the cultural space of this diplomatic mission in the US capital, which is located at 2443 Massachusetts Av., N.W., Washington,D.C.

For more than a decade, the government of Venezuela has been a leader in the formation of new regional partnerships and cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening South America and promoting unity among Latin American and Caribbean States. Arguably, the most well known has been ALBA (The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America), founded in 2004. To date, ALBA has eight member countries including Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and Venezuela. Rivaling neoliberal claims that “there is no alternative,” the ALBA countries have been working to develop new forms of economic activity that are designed to meet basic needs and foster more equal relations within the region.

Please join us for a discussion on this new model of economic integration and other key initiatives that aim to promote transnational policies and regional cooperation through the ideals of Bolivarianism.

with Mr.Vladimir López Ríos, a senior economic researcher at the Central Bank of Venezuela and
Professor Dan Hellinger who has been following Venezuelan politics since his book Venezuela: Tarnished Democracy, in 1991.

*A cocktail reception with the speakers will follow the event.

The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will screen the documentary “Beyond Elections: Redefining Democracy in the Americas,” this Wednesday, November 16th at 7pm at the Bolivarian Hall in Washington, DC.

Directed by Michael Fox and Silvia Leindecker, the film presents the different social movements that have emerged in the region to foster more participatory, people-centered forms of democracy.

The film depicts a broad scope of initiatives, from the communal councils of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Brazil’s participatory budgeting, from constitutional assemblies to grassroots movements, from recovered factories to cooperatives throughout the hemisphere. It is a journey that takes us across the Americas to try to answer one of the most important questions of our time: What is democracy?

“Beyond Elections,” with subtitles in English, includes interviews with Eduardo Galeano, Amy Goodman, Emir Sader, Marta Harnecker, Ward Churchill and Leonardo Avritzer as well as members of cooperatives, communes, elected leaders, academics and activists in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, the United States and Venezuela.

Silvia Leindecker is an independent director and photographer from Brazil who has worked for the news agencies EFE (of Spain) and Politik (of Germany), as well as many independent projects. Michael Fox is also an independent journalist and film director. He has been a reporter for Venezuelanalisis and Free Speech Radio News, and his articles have appeared in Yes! Magazine, Earth Island Journal, NACLA, the Nation online, and other publications.

The screening of “Beyond Elections” at the Bolivarian Hall will be followed by an open discussion with public moderated by Lisa Sullivan, the Latin America coordinator of School of the Americas Watch (SOAW).

Sullivan has lived in Barquisimeto, a Venezuelan state, since 1982. Prior to this, she lived in Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia and Bolivia. Sullivan has led delegations to 17 Latin American countries over the past few years where they have met with hundreds of social movements, human rights organizations as well as with government officials, including eight presidents. That´s why she brings a unique perspective of someone deeply immersed in the grassroots communities of Latin America, and especially in Venezuela, which will allow her to share about the sweeping changes taking place in the continent.

According to the website of Teatro de La Luna, it is “stuffed with the truth, with bruising maturity and clarity, we are entertainingly submerged in the subject matter, and, as though a mirror, we see the reflection of those who have been able to tell their own “Tales Told Under the Influence” – with lots of laughter!”

“Tales Told Under the Influence” is part of the international festival, in which theater companies from many other countries are also participating, including Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and the U.S. These plays will be presented from November 11 to 19 at the Gunston Arts Center – Theater Two, 2700 S.
