The President of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), Tibisay Lucena, announced at a press conference in Caracas that 7,829 candidates have registered to run in the regional elections this December 16.
She said that there are 43 candidates for governor in Venezuela’s 23 different states. For the National Assembly, there are 6,790 candidates for the 110 seats that are chosen by simple vote and 929 candidates for the 52 seats that are chosen according to political party. Meanwhile, there are 67 candidates for the three indigenous seats in congress.
“The regional offices [of the CNE] will continue their work on Thursday and it is probably that this number will change, but with this a great percentage of all the candidacies have been processed and admitted,” she said.
Lucena expressed satisfaction with the quantity of political organizations throughout the country that answered the call to participate in the regional elections.
She said the CNE is successfully managing for the first time two electoral events at once – the presidential elections on October 7 and the regional elections on December 16.
“It is a great challenge, it’s demanding, but it’s also very satisfying, because this National Electoral Council is demonstrating once again what it is capable of, of managing two electoral schedules, two elections,” she said.
