Regarding Jackson Diehl’s Feb. 20 op-ed column, “Venezuela’s ballot-box uprising” [3]:

Today’s political opposition in Venezuela is the same one that failed citizens in the past. The people will indeed determine the outcome of the Oct. 7 presidential election, but unlike The Post, they remember the injustices of the past.

Venezuela’s democratic renewal occurred in 1998, when voters rejected a corrupt system in favor of the egalitarian policies of President Hugo Chávez. His leadership has since been tested in 15 elections certified as free and fair by international observers. In fact, our National Electoral Council is widely recognized as among the most advanced in the world.

Social spending under Mr. Chávez is not a campaign tactic but a steadfast policy of investing in human development. Our gross domestic product has roughly doubled in the past decade, and our poverty rate has fallen by more than half. The Post can support any candidate it likes, but it can’t deny these facts.
