An exposition by the famous Venezuelan artist Jesús Soto opens today, January 10, at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery. While Soto’s work has previously been displayed at the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art, this is his first large-scale exhibition to be held at a New York museum in more than 35 years.

Curated by Estrellita B. Brodsky, “Soto: Paris and Beyond, 1950–1970,” is comprised of approximately 50 works produced by the painter and sculptor in the early part of his early career, after he moved from Caracas to Paris in 1950. It shows Soto’s visionary trajectory as well as his relationships with other members of the avant-garde scene in Paris.

Brodsky, quoted in the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal, said: “We hope this exhibition contributes to increased critical appreciation for Soto, who is such a central figure of Latin American art. Now is the right time to reevaluate major Latin American artists within a broader, international context.”

The Jesús Soto Museum of Modern Art in the artist’s home town of Ciudad Bolívar informed that it contributed to the exhibition in New York with five pieces of its collection: “Progression” (1952), “Study for a Series” (1952), “White Wall” (1952), “La Cocotte (1956) and “Serial Painting” (1953).

According to the website of the Grey Gallery, “Soto’s groundbreaking achievements in the fields of perception and interactive art established his reputation as both a primary proponent of kinetic art internationally and one of the most influential Latin American artists of the 20th century.”

“Soto: Paris and Beyond, 1950–1970” will be on display at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery from January 10 to March 31, 2012.
