The construction of a new container terminal in Puerto Cabello, Carabobo state, on Venezuela’s northern coast, will allow the dock to enter ships up to 70,000 DWT (Deadweight Tons). The dock currently receives 30,000 DWT ships.
The information was issued by the Venezuelan Minister of People’s Power for Transportation and Communications Francisco Garcés, on Wednesday, after the signing of a memorandum of understanding with China Harbour Engineering Company for the construction of a container terminal in the city of Puerto Cabello.
“The harbor is going to expand not only its storage capacity, but its operation. Venezuela is improving the maritime technologies that will be needed in the next years. The goal is to receive big ships –which currently cannot arrive to Venezuela, without any problem through this new expanding project,” he explained.
Garcés said that the containers’ manipulation and storage capacity will be increased, and that the technological platform will be updated as well.
“A technological platform will be incorporated, which will allow linking all the country’s docks for the proper and efficient development of this process in domestic and external maritime operations. This will stand Venezuela as the country with the highest dock development and best technology in the region,” highlighted the minister.
Additionally, Garcés said that the building process of the new dock is currently in its final phase, and that it will be subsequently determined how many jobs the project will generate and the needed total investment.
The Venezuelan minister also explained that the truckloads are no expected to circulate inside the city since a railway system will be linked to the dock transportation.
Gracés said that this project is being developed not only in this dock but it is part of a general expansion policy of the Venezuelan maritime area since the country has been internationally promoted as agricultural and industrial development power.
