In a session on Thursday, the National Assembly (AN) approved the Organic Law for Education, with reforms proposed by legislators and the Commission that wrote the law.

One of the benefits of the new law includes an increase in the number of school days. A minimum 200-day school year was established, while maintaining 60 days of vacation.

Contrary to arguments used by a minority group against the new education law, the proposal consolidates the legal authority of the concept that: “families have the duty, right and responsibility for the formation of values, principles, beliefs, attitudes, rules and habits of children, adolescents, youths and adults.”

Likewise, the law respects ideological pluralism; based in part in the Bolivarian doctrine, in the doctrine of Simon Rodriguez and the social humanism, as well as being open to all currents of thought.

In light of the proposed modifications, the law was returned to the Commission on Education, where the report will be edited to be read before the full Assembly.

The debate began yesterday in the early afternoon and was attended by hundreds of citizens who demonstrated their support outside the National Assembly, chanting slogans and watching the parliamentary proceedings on a giant screen.
